It is very difficult to describe the phenomenon which is the Plataforma Cultural which takes place in the tiny village of Las Alias in Cariatiz. It is a unique event including craft stalls and demonstrations, an organic veg stall, a vegetarian pie stall and a refreshment stall.
But it is so much more than that as there is also a gathering of people who discuss philosophy in the Philosphical Cafe, a performance by the local traditional music and dance group and an art exhibition in the house alongside, which is dedicated to exhibitions and where some of the area's international artists show their work. And as with all good markets, friends meet and new friends are made. It has a truly international flavour with many nationalities meeting there.
If you are looking for a morning out in the countryside and a chance to buy hand made, home made and home grown, come and have a look. Probably only 15 minutes from Turre, take the A7 motorway towards Almeria, first motorway exit 514 for Sorbas and then the turning for Cariatiz on the right after 7 km at the top of the long hill. Follow the red signs to Cortijo de Arte La Barquilla.
